Hertz reports twenty four layoffs, including nineteen at headquarters in Estero

Hertz has eliminated two dozen positions, mostly at its headquarters in Estero.

On Thursday, the rental car giant trimmed twenty four jobs, nineteen of which were based at its fresh global offices off Williams Road.

“As with any large business, we make ongoing switches regarding staffing,” Hertz spokeswoman Karen Drake said in an email. “In the normal course of business, we hire for positions that have request, while shifting positions in others.”

Despite the layoffs, the company is hiring “where we still have needs across the business,” she said.

“Tho’ the decision to reduce staffing is never effortless, it was the result of an ongoing evaluation of our business to ensure we have the right people allocated against the right work to support the organization and supply a excellent rental car product to our customers,” Drake said.

The company provided no other details about the layoffs.

Hertz last reported layoffs in February 2016, when the company downsized its information technology department after expanding its partnership with IBM. At the time, Hertz announced twenty five of sixty information technology positions in Estero could be eliminated.

The company also said then that it was making more sweeping cuts in Oklahoma as a result of its stir out of the former Dollar Thrifty headquarters in Tulsa and the modernization of its administrative functions at its Oklahoma City Service Center.

Hertz moved into its fresh digs in late 2015, relocating from Fresh Jersey after its purchase of rival Dollar Thrifty.

The company received $Four million in economic incentives from the county for its budge. Hertz was required to supply seven hundred jobs and to spend $60 million on the project to receive the money. It got the last of two checks from the county earlier this year after exceeding all of its promises.

As of early January, Hertz had about seven hundred twenty employees at its headquarters, and the company has continued to hire. It’s unclear how many employees are left after the layoffs.

The agreement with the county requires that Hertz maintain at least seven hundred jobs through Sept. 30, 2020.

“Hertz is in the retention period of its incentive agreement and must report each June thirty the number of jobs it maintains in Lee County. Following that report, staff will do an on-site compliance visit,” said Betsy Clayton, the county’s communications director, in a statement.

If Hertz’s job count falls below the requirements of the incentive agreement, the company would have to repay $Five,714 to the county for each fresh job lost, within thirty days of providing its annual report.

Hertz has been meeting its promises to the state, which has given the company more than $7.16 million in incentives, according to the Florida Department of Economic Chance. The state’s maximum potential investment in the project is listed at $Ten million on the state’s economic development portal.

The duration for the state incentives is about twenty years.
