Car hops curb in Midtown after crash, injures ten pedestrians with one woman hospitalized
An SUV hopped a curb and injured ten people in Midtown on Thursday — sending one woman to the hospital, authorities and witnesses said.
A woman driving a Chevy Tahoe with seven passengers, including at least one child, hooked bumpers with the rear of a black livery cab as they both turned right off Ninth Ave. onto W. 37th St. at about 12:30 p.m., police said.
She accelerated and hit a parked van, careened onto the sidewalk and hit a man and a woman in their 40s.
“I think the SUV spotted the yellow light and determined to accelerate,” said witness Jonny Giordani, 41, possessor of Jonny’s Panini near where the SUV crashed. “In the moment it touched the cab by the front, it totally switched direction and ran onto the sidewalk.”
“She went up on the sidewalk and hit a fence and a tree, slowed down and then hit the lady walking on the sidewalk,” said Jamel Daiffallah, 28, a clerk at AM PM Deli and Organic Foods and witnessed the crash in front of his store. “Two guys were also shoved by the car but weren’t badly hurt.”
Mohan Anluwalih, 52, rushed out of his restaurant and spotted the woman on the sidewalk.

“She was bleeding, with blood all over her,” Anluwalih said. “She was badly hit. After that, they called the ambulances to come get her.”
Giordani and other witnesses rushed to help.
“I ran out there and eyed the lady down,” Giordani said. “She was conscious but bleeding from the head . She was on the sidewalk with her face down . She was conscious but she couldn’t get up.”
“I throw myself to the floor to see if anyone was under the car,” he added. “Luckily no one was there.”
Medics took the injured woman to Bellevue Hospital. In addition to her head injury, she had a bruised gam. Nine other people were treated at the scene for minor injuries, officials said.

The crash irked Kang Miung, 55, the driver of a parked EDS Express van that was hit.
“I entered the building for lunch and I came back and found this,” he said. “It’s a big inconvenience for me, mostly. I’ve already been waiting here (behind police gauze) for an hour.”
City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez visited the crash scene and said cement barriers should be installed to protect pedestrians in high-congestion areas.
“We are calling on the city to put in cement bollards like the ones in Times Square to pedestrian crossings, schools,” he said. “The other day I was walking at 38th and Tenth and there were people walking on the street because there’s no room.”
On May Legal, a motorist mounted the sidewalk in Times Square at high speed, killing an 18-year-old tourist and injuring twenty two others.
Richard Rojas, 26, of the Bronx faces murder and onslaught charges in that horrific incident, which authorities called intentional.
