Cement truck driver on trial in bus operator’s death
“Not every accident is the result of criminal conduct,” defense attorney David Besso told jurors in Nassau County Court in Mineola. Authorities claim Ragen, 45, of Mineola, was high on Valium and talking on his cellphone when he drove into an Oyster Bay Road overpass he knew was too low for his truck before plowing into the bus. Ragen has pleaded not guilty to charges including aggravated vehicular homicide. Authorities said he could spend up to twenty five years in prison if jurors convict him of that top charge. Bus driver Jorge Guevara, a 45-year-old father of four, was driving the special-needs students, who ranged in age from six to 9, home when he died. “He is the reason that so many lives were switched that day. He is the reason that Jorge Guevara lost his life,” Assistant District Attorney Stephanie Dellinger said of Ragen. She told jurors Ragen never slowed down or veered away before hitting an LIRR overpass that GPS demonstrated he’d already backed away from earlier that day when his truck didn’t fit under it. Dellinger said bus attendant Louis Kragouras, then 64, needed surgery to implant metal parts in a hip and a knee after the crash and now walks with a cane. One student suffered a violated jaw and cuts, including a detached lip, while the other three had mostly minor injuries, the prosecutor said. Dellinger also said there were differences in Ragen’s accounts of the accident that he gave police at the scene and later at a hospital. But Ragen’s lawyer said it took police months to arrest his client.

SCIOTO COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) – A fire chief is in stable condition after he was injured when the tanker he was in flipped Saturday afternoon. Another firefighter also was taken to the hospital. He was treated and released. The two are with the Vernon Township Volunteer Fire Department in Wheelersburg, Ohio. The crash happened about four p.m. Saturday along Turkey Foot Road, just as they were returning to the station following a call to a house fire. A spokesperson said the pumper’s rear tire went off the road, causing it to overturn. The truck had just refilled its water and fuel supply when the accident happened, causing them to lose 1,000 gallons of water and fifty gallons of fuel, meaning they now only have Three,000 gallons of water available to battle fires. “Water is always key to putting out any type of fire, and out here we have hydrants spread so skinny you need that amount of water once you get there because you have to wait on other water from other trucks or other departments,” said Vernon Township VFD Assistant Fire Chief Ricky Henderson. That was the only pumper the station had, so the Green Volunteer Fire Department has loaned the Vernon VFD a pumper. The assistant chief says residents shouldn’t worry because they still will be able to battle fires with the borrowed pumper.

Bencun says it only takes inbetween thirty and forty five minutes to do a car seat inspection. All that is needed is the child safety seat, the child who will be using it and the car the seat will be used in most often. As part of the inspection, Bencun checks for expiration dates on car seats, any harm, and how well the seat fits the child. A major part of the session includes hands-on education of parents and caregivers on decent use of the seats. “We actually instruct them how to put the car seat in their car correctly. We don’t want to do things for them, but we want them to be able to do that without us,” she says. “And of course, if there are any issues we are always here to help.” Seats include infant seats that are forward facing only, convertible seats that are either rear or forward facing and booster seats. Bencun encourages parents to contact YSB and get their seats examined before their baby is born. However, she has made a few visits to the hospital to make inspections prior to newborn infants coming home. It’s lighter if parents call YSB before they go to the hospital, she says. Bencun estimates she inspects inbetween five and ten safety seats per month. The Automotive Safety Program at Riley Hospital, Parkview Huntington Hospital and United Way provide funding for the program.

PHOTO: FILE LOS ANGELES: The tragic car accident that killed Prompt & Furious actor Paul Walker on November 30, two thousand thirteen was caused by excessive speed and not a mechanical failure, the Los Angeles County Sheriff said on Tuesday, concluding its almost four-month investigation. The crimson Porsche Carrera GT sports car driven by Walkers friend Roger Rodas, 38, was travelling at speeds of eighty to ninety three miles per hour (129 to one hundred fifty kilometres per hour) before Rodas lost control of the car. Consequently, the car crashed into trees and a utility pole in Santa Clarita, California, northwest of Los Angeles. Investigators determined the cause of the fatal solo-vehicle collision was unsafe speed for the roadway conditions, Los Angeles County Sheriff Commander Mike Parker said in a statement. Walker, 40, died from traumatic injuries and burns while Rodas died of numerous traumatic injuries in the one-car crash, the Los Angeles County coroners office determined in January. Walker was in the process of filming Prompt & Furious seven at the time and production was halted a few days later. No drugs or alcohol were found in the bods of Walker and Rodas. The investigation determined that both were wearing seatbelts, and driver and passenger airbags had deployed. Universal Pictures said in December that the release of the seventh instalment in the very lucrative franchise would be shoved back by nine months to April 2015. Walker will emerge in the film. But I never had another word with him.” Haar said she still has agony on the right side of her neck and back, and has a large bruise on her right arm from the influence to the steering wheel. Her car, which is registered to her father, has trunk and bumper harm. Nassau Police Insp. Kenneth Lack, a department spokesman, said Krumpter was unavailable to comment Tuesday. Lack said in a statement that after the crash, “Commissioner Krumpter assisted the driver of car number two, and called Suffolk County Police.” Krumpter’s Tahoe was at the department’s Fleet Service Bureau in Bethpage Tuesday awaiting repair, said Lack, who said he could not instantaneously provide a monetary value of the vehicle’s harm. Suffolk Deputy Chief Kevin Fallon, a department spokesman, said officers don’t typically issue tickets in accidents unless they observe an infraction. Fallon said Krumpter received no special treatment. “The only one . . . [who] the officers are laying any type of blame is to Commissioner Krumpter,” said Fallon. “That says to me that it was treated professionally and appropriately.” The speed limit on the section of Elwood Road where the accident occurred is forty miles per hour, Fallon said.
Investigators: Speed about ninety mph, not mechanical problems, caused actor Walker’s car crash
Investigators concluded that unsafe driving, not mechanical problems, caused the crash, according to a person who has reviewed a report by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and California Highway Patrol. Investigators calculated that Rodas was driving inbetween eighty one mph and ninety four mph when his two thousand five Porsche Carrera GT began to drift after coming out of a curve. “The vehicle had no mechanical failure and the harm that occurred to the vehicle was from the collision,” accident reconstruction specialists with the Highway Patrol wrote, according to the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the report has not been officially released yet. A spokeswoman said Tuesday that the Sheriff’s Department had no fresh information to release regarding the investigation into the Nov. Thirty crash. “We will have something in the very near future,” department spokeswoman Nicole Nishida wrote in an email. The CHP declined comment. The Associated Press reported in December that investigators had found no evidence that the car had mechanical problems and ruled out debris or other roadway conditions. Subsequently, Porsche sent engineers to California to review the infrequent car’s wreckage. However it was badly mangled and burned, the engineers were able to do a thorough analysis. They found no problems with the car’s electrical systems, brakes, throttle, fuel system, steering, suspension or other systems. Porsche declined a request for comment Tuesday.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Commander Mike Parker said on Tuesday, March twenty five that speed was the cause of the accident, not mechanical failure. “Investigators determined the cause of the fatal solo-vehicle collision was unsafe speed for the roadway conditions,” Parker said. The two thousand five Porsche Carrera GT which was driven by Walker’s friend Roger Rodas traveled “inbetween eighty and ninety three mph at the time the car impacted a power pole and several trees.” Speed limit for the Santa Clarita, California area was forty five mph. Per autopsy results, both fellows did not consume alcohol or drugs prior to the accident which took place on November 30. They also wore seat belts when driving and the air bags were deployed when the car hit the tree and light pole. The car, however, had a modified harass system which permitted it to go swifter. The tires, which were more than nine years old, might contribute to the accident. According to coroner’s report, Walker and Rodas were found in “pugilistic” stance, which means they were bracing for influence. He suffered from fractures on left jawbone, collarbone, pelvis, ribs, spine, right wrist and left arm while Rodas “rapidly died of severe blunt head, neck and chest trauma.” Walker was taking part in ” Rapid and Furious seven ” when he died at the age of 40. The production of the movie was halted for months, but will resume this month.
Investigators: Unsafe speed caused Paul Walker’s car crash
They found no problems with the car’s electrical systems, brakes, throttle, fuel system, steering, suspension or other systems. Porsche declined a request for comment Tuesday. The conclusion about the speed was based on a “yaw” mark on the road that the car’s tire left on the road in an area of industrial office parks in Santa Clarita, about thirty miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Witnesses told a sheriff’s deputy that they thought the car could have been traveling in excess of one hundred mph. Post-crash investigators noted several issues with the condition of the car, which had several prior owners, including IndyCar driver Graham Rahal: -Its original harass system had been modified in a way that could permit it to go quicker, but also could have been done to switch its sound. David Buchan/Getty Photos Fans pay tribute to Paul Walker at the site of his fatal car accident. -Its tires were about nine years old; the holder’s manual suggests switching the tires after four years. -Its left rear brake rotor was worn below manufacturer specifications, but that did not contribute to the crash.

Tho’ it was badly mangled and burned, the engineers were able to do a thorough analysis. They found no problems with the car’s electrical systems, brakes, throttle, fuel system, steering, suspension or other systems. “The results of the investigation showcase that, according to all the available evidence, this crash was caused by dangerous driving at speeds much too high for the road in question,” Porsche said in a written statement. “We stand by our Carrera GT and by the investigation.” The conclusion about the speed was based on a “yaw” mark that one of the car’s tires left on the road in an area of industrial office parks in Santa Clarita, about thirty miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.
