Update: Police have identified the pedestrian struck and gravely injured Monday afternoon on East Main Street as 63-year-old Daniel Locastro of Riverhead.

The driver was identified by police as Barbara Guerin, 76, also of Riverhead.

Police said no criminality was suspected in the crash.

Original story: An elderly man crossing the street near Town Hall in Riverhead was struck by a car Monday afternoon and rushed to the hospital with serious injuries, Riverhead Town police said.

The man was crossing East Main Street near the intersection of Howell Avenue about Five:Ten p.m. when he was hit by a green Hyundai Sonata sedan headed west, said Lt. David Lessard.

The victim suffered “serious injuries” in the crash, Lt. Lessard said. The man’s pulse stopped at the scene, but Riverhead ambulance volunteers were able to revive him using CPR, police at the scene said.

The victim was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center by ambulance volunteers, Lt. Lessard said. Police at the scene said no arrests had been made, however the investigation was still ‘preliminary.’

Police closed East Main Street inbetween Fischel Avenue and Prospect Place while they investigated the scene of the accident. The site of the crash was taped off, with two brown boots still lounging in the street.

One onlooker said he didn’t see the crash itself, but witnessed the victim lounging in the road “and they weren’t even moving.”

“It’s crazy,” said Charles Davis, a local Reverend and resident.

Others watching the scene said cars travel too quickly down this spread of East Main Street populated with two apartment complexes and a cluster of shops.

“[Drivers] are flying by here,” said Theadora Cohen, who lives up the road from the site of the accident. Several pedestrians have been struck and injured or killed near the scene of Friday’s crash in latest years, she said.

“They have to put up speed limit signs or something,” Ms. Cohen said. “They have to save lives here.”
