Residents of a Yeovil street could be left without parking and traffic congestion could get worse if plans for a fresh car showroom are approved, according to two worried locals.
Letters sent to South Somerset District Council make it clear that some people strongly object to a proposal for a fresh FJ Chalke Kia and Nissan showroom next to West Hendford and Lysander Road.
The showroom – which would be on abandoned land inbetween Lidl supermarket and Yeovil’s police station – would also have a workshop, valeting service and office space.
Despite the protestations, it could bring jobs and regenerate a derelict area (see below).
FJ Chalke presently has its Yeovil showroom based on Sherborne Road.

9 reasons one resident thinks the showroom shouldn’t be permitted
Sheila Jones, of Fosse Park Road, wrote to the district council to object to the plans.
Her letter, which is publicly available online, lists nine key reasons she opposes the showroom proposal.
Here are the nine reasons, in her own words:
1 – The proposed development of the site will exacerbate an already busy main road and access road that has already been increasingly used by people going to the fresh Lidl supermarket.
Two – This will result in a further increase in both carbon pollution and noise pollution particularly along West Hendford.
Trio – There is a one way system in place along the residential roads opposite the proposed development site and there would be further traffic along an already busy one way street system, especially during the main morning and evening rush hours.
Four – DANGER! There is a much enhanced risk to the dangerous idea of siting the entrance opposite an existing development
Five – There are already residential houses built upon the site and they would be adversely affected by all of the above and potentially would display a decrease in the value of their properties.
6 – Landscaping? What landscaping? This is a massive site the proposed landscaping is miniscule.
7 – There is already a query relating to the offloading of cars.
8 – There is a proposed workshop and valeting facility and this will most certainly add to the disturbance of the residential area.
9 – This area is mainly residential and surely a more sympathetic proposal could be put forward. For example, the government is very keen to use brownfield sites for homes.
Is this the case in Yeovil ? It would show up not.
Therefore I would suggest a fresh proposal of mixed use development since the one presently under consideration is likely to swamp the site and cause inconvenience to residents.
There is, already, at this present time, a complaint made about deliveries and time schedules to Lidl supermarket along West Hendford.
I hope that these points will be taken into consideration and also that all residents of the area will be kept informed of developments relating to the proposal, including invitations to attend any or all subsequent planning meeting.
